The island of Tilos continues to set an inspiring example for sustainable energy transition in Europe. Featured in the latest Sustainable Regions in Action publication by FEDARENE, Tilos demonstrates how integrated clean energy systems can support both environmental and local economic goals.
Its hybrid energy system combines 800 kW of wind, 160 kWp of solar PV, and 800 kW / 2,800 kWh of battery storage, complemented by municipal rooftop PV generation of around 80 MWh per year, ensuring a highly resilient and renewable-based energy supply.
Beyond energy, Tilos is advancing circular economy practices, achieving approximately 90% material recovery, reducing total waste by 20% and plastic waste by 30%, while also creating 10 new local jobs. The island has further strengthened its sustainability efforts with a €1 million investment in electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.
The article also features the HiHELIOS project, highlighting how next-generation hybrid battery storage solutions are contributing to energy security, grid flexibility, and Europe’s decarbonisation efforts.
